On Christmas morning, i checked my email and got 3 christmas presents from WPJA!

3 of my photos were awarded placing in various categories among WPJA competition. Every year WPJA hosts the largest wedding photography competitions in the world judged by panels of award-winning photojournalists. Competitions are open only to WPJA members, are part of the association’s commitment to upholding the highest standards in wedding photojournalism.

Here are the print screen of the award winning photos. They were taken in HongKong Disneyland, Sydney and Kota Tinggi.

All the makeup is by Beauty Magic by Liren Neo

Shooting at Disneyland has always been one of my dreams! Its not easy when you are shooting in the rain. When we arrived, our luggage was also delayed for more than 48hours and had to buy all the equipment again in order to shoot/makeup. Thank you to Zexin and Huifeng for making one of my dreams came true! Its even sweeter that we managed to nail an award placing!

Was kinda shock in the morning when we started to shoot. Sydney Blue Mountain was totally fogged up! You cant even see 5m in front of you. Got to thank Liren for helping me with the slave flash lights in this photo!

Gavin and Perlyn wanted totally different photos from everyone else. So we trashed the dress at the waterfalls in kota tinggi! And thank you for all the yummy food along the way too! Looking forward to our next road trip soon!

1950 Turns 6!

It seems just like yesterday. 1950 Photography turns 6 this month! It has been an interesting year with it's ups and downs here.

One interesting step that we have taken is the formation of 'Wedding Services Singapore' (www.weddingservices.com.sg) with some of our good working partners in the wedding industry. In conjunction with the formation, we've held our first 'self organised' and successful wedding services showcase named 'iLove' in Orchid Country Club just a month ago.

Another subtle step we have taken is the effort to improve recognition on our beliefs in wedding photography...that is to have images that not only look pretty but are able to portray the personalities of the couples as well as the mood of the wedding. In short, we keep the images Real and Honest.

We are also fortunate to have more couples whose relationships with us blossomed into friendship. This is often a wedding photographer's wish to have our clients seeing us as beyond a service provider. We really appreciate that and no doubt, it makes a difference in various ways.

Once again, we'll like to thank all of you who have supported us, appreciated our work and given your constructive comments to our work. We will not come this far without all of that from you.

ChuianFeng 31st Dec 2010 at Marina Mandarin Singapore with Jeremy (Children's Cancer Foundation)

Jeremy was diagnosed with Cancer and one of his wishes was to see fireworks. Marina Mandarin Singapore made Jeremy wish came true by hosting him in their top floor suite for the annual countdown fireworks display.

When most of us are ushering the year 2011 in celebration, I had this unique opportunity and am grateful to have had the opportunity to document the event and bring a moment of joy to Jeremy and his family.

I received a very sad news from my friend, Gian Heng this morning. Jeremy had passed away last week, ending his battle with Cancer.

When we spend so much time counting lost moments, we have also lost the chance to make every moment count.

Let's help humanity together

On Friday, March 11, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan. It was the most severe quake worldwide in more than a year and the worst ever recorded in Japan, with more than 50 aftershocks following in its wake and tsunami waves sweeping inland over both urban and rural areas.

We've seen enough footage/photos of extensive damage done over the last few days. an entire city was wiped out, tens of thousands missing/feared dead/died/injured. JAPAN NEEDS YOUR HELP.

We are all shocked and sadden by the recent earthquake events in Japan. 1950 Photography have decided to do something to help out all the victims affected by the natural disaster.

For every full actual day or pre-wedding sign up from now till 31st march 2011, 1950 Photography will donate $200 to Red Cross Singapore to aid the victims in Japan.

Chris and Jol (The Christmas Wedding)

Chris and Jol's wedding is one which I know will be great before I shoot for them. Firstly, there is this feeling that they are not doing it 'for show'. Secondly, I can feel their enthusiasm for the day from the meetings we had before.

It need not be lavish. The simple joy of them with their loved ones are good enough to make the day great. The use of christmas themed photo booth props during the banquet reception is a nice touch as well.

Hello everyone,

Its the festive season again!

And this year, WPJA gave me a christmas present by awarding me a little placing under their 2010 Q3 competition Lit portrait category. :)

Here's the photo that got the placing.

This photo was taken overseas, under the temperature of shivering cold 2 degrees, on top of Mount Wellington in Tasmania, in total darkness and hunger during mid autumn festival. Also, our car was running very low on petrol during that time. And if we switch off the car engine, it might not be able to ignite again due to the coldness. Not so romantic for a mid autumn festival afterall. :p

Liren had to use my small slave lighting to help lit up the couple and Teddy got to use the slave flash to light up the background environment. Talk about the perfect teamwork here. :)

Did i mentioned that this photo was also taken beside the mountain toilet? ^_^

Koon Liang and Pei Yun Morning Highlights

3 hours of sleep, 13 hours of work, loads of fun. That's what I got today.

Despite having serious lack of sleep together with the incident of the missing make up artist in the morning, they took everything in great stride.

We started of by going to Peiyun's home in Johor in the wee hours and it followed by an interesting gatecrash then by simple tea ceremonies in both Johor and Singapore. The night was really a blast but I'll leave the images for later.

1950 Photography turns five this month!

Our humble beginnings
It’s been a long way since 1950 Photography began its infant steps half a decade back, run only by Yong How alone. The candid and uncontrived wedding photography style of 1950 Photography was well liked by many couples and things took off from there. Chuian Feng and Darren joined 1950 Photography some time later and added new dimensions into our photography as we worked to reform 1950 Photography into a ‘team’. Working as a team, we managed to leverage on each other’s fortes and grew further together.

We always believe that the passion to improve our work is the key in order to sustain and grow 1950 Photography. This can be a challenge at times of adversity and challenges and we had been able to pick ourselves up and strive ahead.

All these are not possible without the support of all the couples whom we had the honour to document their weddings over the past years. The trust they have on our photography and the friendships we have built along the way are invaluable. We are also very fortunate to have good people who are always willing to offer their useful advice which enabled us to overcome obstacles and to grow 1950 Photography for the better.

Just back from Francis and Mary's wedding. Very thankful to them and their families for their great hospitality.Also, once again, the guys and ladies get to switch roles for the gatecrashing. The guys definitely had a good time sabotaging the poor ladies.

Awesome sunlight. But we learn that its very hard to have falling leaves. So, Unker Yonghow had to throw the leaves while i prone on the grass to shoot this photo. Have to finish before the sunlight is gone too.

Jasmine and Yew Wah's evening solumnisation and dinner reception was one that speaks simplicity yet with the elements that we photographers like. No packed schedule, lots of nice moments between loved ones and children having fun.

I did not get to meet Yew Wah till the wedding day itself. When Jasmine shared her wedding day plans with me, I was a little concerned that there'll be little for me to shoot if everyone is just sitting down and eating quietly. She assured me that there'll be lots of kids running around and they'll set the mood for the evening. Well, she's really right. Jasmine had also encouraged me to get more shots of the kids and goodness, I did end up with a record breaking high of kids:couple ratio of shots.

I've literally enjoyed myself through the evening.

Hello everyone! Apologies for MIA for a while (few months) :p Anyway, I'm back. Must blame facebook for the easy uploader. Blogger should have something similar. :p

This got to be the most fierce gate-crashing I had ever covered. It actually lasts more than an hour. Kudos to Anthony and his buddies for their endurance.
They managed to clear all the obstacles with 'ease'. Anthony is actually an army regular, so i bet the sisters wanna test him.

Wedding of James and Daphne

I get to document James and Daphne's wedding on the last day of 2009. It was great to be able to end 2009 with their wedding coverage as it's pretty unique.

James is a Korean while Daphne a Singaporean. The wedding though is pretty much Singaporean style but it comes with some little touches of Korean. From there, I also get to learn how to say the '1, 2, 3' for taking group shots in Korean. Haha.

Lexis and Angie Wedding

Guess fate brought this couple and me together. Somehow, Lexis and Angie will become my future neighbour as we will be staying in the same block in a few years time. Most probably we will be doing alot of things together in future as well due to many of our similiar interest (Sammi, speakers, food, etc...) :)

This wedding is also different from the norm as i started off at Lexis side. We had to travel to JB in the morning to pick Angie from her house. So, no makeup shots this time as i got to see what the brothers go thru during the morning preps.

JUDGES COMMENTS: Great concept and well executed.

ChuianFeng Comments: Actually, Weiling almost didnt want this shot due to the logistics. Thank God we went ahead! :)

Off camera/strobes, 12th placing

JUDGES COMMENTS: The backlight and the fill work well and I like the lights in the background which aid the composition. I wish the light wasn't so hot on the champagne glass. With a bit more detail in the glass the image would have been even stronger.

Andy and Linda Wedding

I'm so sorry that this little space of ours have been neglected.

I did not meet Andy till the wedding day itself. Was kind of anticipating what kind of guy Andy would be. Well, turns out Andy & Linda's big day is a total blast to shoot. :)

Greetings everyone!

First of all, Happy New Year to all of you! :)

I've met up with several couples lately and they all asked me the same question..."Why you never update your blog?".

When I was walking by a block, someone shouted from above shouting "Can you please update your blog?!!"

Ok, the 2nd part is not real.

Perhaps to break the silence here, let me present to you a simple slideshow I've quickly made for Richard and Jane. I've shot their solemnisation about 2 years back. I was very glad that Jane called me some months back to ask me to document their wedding day but another couple had engaged me before that. I guess it's all fate that the other couple decided to change their wedding date and Jane called me again sometime after to try her luck again. The rest is history. Fate or coincidence, you decide.

I shall let the pics say the rest.

Shock and Awe

Had a very happening start to my 2010 with Kris and Dave's wedding.

Though I personally don't fancy much on the gatecrash portion, I think today's one is very worth the mention. Finally, we have the guys not just overrunning the ladies but had subdued them almost completely during the gatecrash.

The guys did what the ladies had wanted them to do but they reciprocrated with something more.

I feel like a war photographer when shooting the session having to dodge missiles from the guns, ensuring my camera lens' safety from the snow spray, hiding from 'grenades' (timed poppers) and looking out for possibility of a popper popping into my ear.

Good job ladies but kudos to the guys for finally gaining a good point for once! Also credits to whoever who had cleared up the big mess after we left the house. =p

SINGAPORE - Wedding couples planning to show video or photo montages accompanied by popular love songs - the de rigueur for wedding celebrations these days - should think twice: Either they cough up between $100 and $200 for each song or risk getting hit in the pocket for copyright infringement.

MediaCorp has learnt that the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (Compass) - which represents over 1,000 composers and lyricists in Singapore, including JJ Lin and Taufik Batisah, and at least one million more members worldwide - is clamping down on the illegal use of copyrighted music for weddings.

It has sent letters to wedding photographers and videographers asking them to buy the licences for songs they wish to use - on their corporate websites and in their works - while stopping short of suggesting active enforcement.

Compass' actions have left industry players in a limbo, with some even advising their customers against using copyrighted songs in their own amateur montages.

Engineer Benjamin Koh (not his real name), for one, has decided to do away with music completely on his photo montage, to be shown during his wedding reception next month.

His three-week effort would show pictures of their growing-up years and courtship days in silence, without the romantic love song he and his wife had chosen.

"It's a bummer because it's less touching without the music, but I'm not willing to pay for the licence," said Mr Koh, 29, who learned about this from his wedding photographer.

When contacted, Compass confirmed that it has stepped up efforts this year to collect royalties from wedding videographers and photographers - it has been writing to them since January, asking them to pay licence fees.

The stricter enforcement arose from the "increasingly rampant" use of copyrighted material, the spokesman said, without disclosing how it arrived at such a conclusion.

Although most hotels pay an annual fee for the rights to play a list of copyrighted songs in their premises, the spokesman said wedding couples still need to pay to play copyrighted songs at their reception.

Penalties Unclear

Many couples told MediaCorp they were unaware of such a requirement and felt the licence fees were too

costly.

"A wedding is a private event where you invite your close friends and relatives to celebrate together; not a public performance where you charge an entrance fee," said newly-wed Felicia Lee, 25.

Compass declined to say what would happen to those who flout the rules but said it has not conducted "raids" at wedding receptions so far.

According to the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore website, remedies for copyright owners in civil lawsuits include injunctions, damages and account of profits. Depending on the flagrancy of the infringement, the court may also order additional damages to be paid by the infringing party to the copyright owner.

For now, it seems that those who make a living out of shooting wedding photos or videos are under closer scrutiny.

Said the spokesman: "The fundamental thing is the music is not created by you, so you can't take someone else's efforts and profit from it."

Compass is apparently stricter about the use of music on the websites of photographers and videographers, and these lensmen fear business may suffer if it comes down equally hard on wedding montages.

"If Compass decides to clamp down on this and charge us, we will have no choice but to raise our charges," said a freelance photographer.

Another felt that Compass should be more transparent. "They should state clearly who they represent, which are the copyrighted songs, and how much one has to pay for different uses - for example, on a website or for a photo montage," he said. "That way, businesses will be more willing to pay for the licences because we can then prove to customers there's a reason for raising our charges."

Koh Weng & Celine's wedding happened right after i got back from my overseas shoot. Luckily, i was able to recover from the serious jet lag before their wedding. :)

The first impression that I got from Sam is that he's a reserved and quiet person and Stella is very bubbly. But the speech by Sam during the banquet changed my impression of him. It's well written and kind of emotional.

Thanks Sam & Stella for allowing me to be part of the celebration. Totally enjoyed every moment covering it.

I luv the way the brothers stand in the background. As if they are Sam's bodyguards.

So sisters, don't say you want 'BIG' ang pow. You will get 'BIG' ang pow. :p

Vincent & Ann

When i first step into Ann's room on her wedding morning, she just pointed at me and exclaimed, "你胖了！“ (You've put on weight!)

I guess i will always remember that for life. :p

Vincent and Ann wedding was a blast. I totally enjoyed their wedding with her bunch of wacky brothers and sisters. :)

Everyone planned the games for Vincent together.

Vincent decided to head to the prata shop nearby for breakfast when he arrived. Really got style.

Ann's mum rejected the angbao for opening the door.

Halfway during the march in, Vincent suddenly kissed Ann. And i totally loved the flare and rainbow caused from the above light. :)

Yap Shinn and Si Jian

Yap Shinn and I had been working together in the grassroots organisation for several years before we left to concentrate on our family and career commitments. Really glad that he's now happily married to Si Jian who's such a wonderful lady.

I had a wonderful time shooting for their wedding day with everyone being so relaxed and spontaneous. The great colours from their peranakan culture really makes the images more captivating.

Last year, i shot Tiande & Jasmine ROM. Its the most bubbly ROM.

This year, its their customary wedding. Jasmine always came across to me as a very outgoing person. When she shed tears in the evening when hugging her brother, i was really.... stunned...

One happening wedding

It's another happening wedding dinner to cover to day. Thanks to Mindy and Dixon who are such a spontaneous couple. Darren had also shot their morning session yesterday. I'm glad that Darren's around shooting with me today as I wasn't feeling too well.

Everything ahead of time

Had a wonderful time shooting for Valerie and Shawn today. Basically, everything were done well ahead of time and we had alot of free time in between. The best part was, almost all the guests arrived for the dinner by 7.45pm and the dinner ended before 10.30pm. Talk about punctuality.

Thanks Valerie, Shawn and your respective families for the great hospitality too. :)

Heartlands might not be the most glamorous places to shoot in. But I personally like the rawness of such locations and would try to show them in the images when possible.

Rain and Lawrence + Rainy Day

A very nice actual day shoot again today. Though it's pretty rushed in the morning, but I'm glad that everyone kept their spirits high. The evening rain came to make everyone think of Rain even on their way to the banquet venue. Haha.

Pretty much worn out now after a super long day of shooting with morning highlights editing.

Here are a couple of shots from Rain and Lawrence 15min outdoor shoot in the midst of their hectic morning schedule (think east to west, west to east and back to west again in 5hrs). Hope you'll like it. :)

Legs aching and I hear my bed calling. =p

Ah xing and Yanqing

Yanqing is a sec sch friend of myself and Darren. Having known her for more than a decade, her wedding is an occassion that we been looking forward to.

After dating with Ah xing for nearly a decade, they finally tie the knot.

We had an enjoyable time at her wedding. I'll let the photos do the talking. :)

Known for her wackiness, her laughter is always very contagious.

Coffee with egg is sure to wake you up in the morning...

And it doesnt help when u are drinking it with a straw..... with holes poke all over.

I think Ah xing's eyes nearly pop out after taking a bite of the wasabi rice thing.

He just simply cant rem the number of job change Yanqing hopped until now.

We went to Temasek Poly for some shots! Its the place where they got to know each other. :)

Ang baos should be in my pocket instead. :p

See them small small, now finally grow up get married. :)

Sorry for the lack of updates in the blog by me. It had been a whirlwind period for me with 4 shoots last week with appointments and morning highlights to work on in between.

Wasn't a very good start back when I return to office yesterday with some technical glitches that prevented me from working for the whole day. :(

Anyway, things are finally back to normal for now and thought I'll just post a shot that I like from Cheryl and Francis's wedding in Bali earlier this month.

I thought i should update the blog before the weekend shoot again where we will be busy ~~munching food~~ shooting at the hotels. :p

At the start of the wedding season, i have the honor to covered Eric and Aileen wedding. Here's some randoms of the day.

Their uncle is doing live telecast throughout the tea ceremony. If only there's a commentator as well. :p

You cant see their faces... but you know that they are happy. :p

Ahh... told you guys. You cant see their faces, but they are happy. :)

During the yum seng toasting, Aileen suddenly teared... I was really taken by surprised as this is the first time someone became touched when everyone else is shouting yum seng.

"Noooo!!! Eric must drink finish himself!" exclaimed the guest.

And thank you everyone for your birthday wishes! They really made my day and reminded me that all the effort put into editing your photos are worth it. *sob* :)

Glad that I'm back in our island country again from Bali though with a bad sunburn and a pair of sore legs.

It's been a while since I've shot Huilin and Zhuowei's wedding back in July. Had posted their wedding day images on our Facebook profile but had missed out on posting some of them here.

Huilin and Zhuowei are one of the most modest couples I've met. From interacting with them since our first meeting to their solumnisation to their wedding day, they are always so nice to everyone. Sometimes it's tough not to go an extra mile for people like them. =p

Their wedding day is rather traditional but the energy, laughters and happy tears throughout the day made everything so special.

Isaiah and Matilda Pre-Wedding Part 2

After going thru Perth with us, Isaiah and Matilda decided to engage me again for their casual fun shots in Singapore. This time, we did it at Matilda's school!

Matilda: Eh, CF... So how are the shoots going to be like?
CF (Me): Erm... Maybe some fun shots? Waterbombs?
Matilda: Wa, really ah? Onz ah!
CF (Me): Ah....

What happens next is the 2hrs photoshoot. We had a classroom shoot with Isaiah playing the guitar and singing before the whole class.

Next, we had some fun in the field with bubbles and ballons!

Followed by waterbombs fight!
